Why the craze for additional qualifications?

You hear of every student talking about adding an additional qualification here and there.

You hear of Jane in the Bachelor of Commerce class wanting to pursue CPA qualifications. CPA stands for Certified Public Accountant. She hopes that the additional CPA will enable her get that extra edge in the job market. On the other hand, Joe in the IT class is taking several certifications in IT. He is doing Microsoft, Oracle, database, networking, CISCO and many more certifications in the IT circles. Steve in the Law class is taking extra classes in CPS (Certified Public Secretaries).

Questions is, are the additional qualifications really helpful.
