We all know that the Kenyan media industry is very competitive. There is too much pressure on journalists and news anchors to air sensational stories that will help improve the ratings of the radio/TV or newspaper. Sometimes therefore, it is perfectly understandable why journalists will use unorthodox means to get a juicy story. To what extent then can one draw the line between aggressiveness of a journalist and unethical professional conduct?
Just recently, The News of the World has been caught in the practice of phone hacking of public figures in the UK. The extent of the phone hacking has been so bad that News of The world will roll out its last publication this Sunday (July 10th). Rupert Murdoch, the owner of the newspaper has flown in to the UK to witness the last print out of the publication. Of course, the exit of the News of the World will just a minor financial set back for the global media tycoon.
In Kenya, journalists sometimes have found themselves on the wrong side of the law. In their quest to bring out juicy stories or uncover great scandals, they have ended up using unorthodox means. Kiss FM Presenter Caroline Mutoko has found herself in the dock a few times, most notably against Martha karua. Some celebrities have also roughed up journalists. The Pulse recently alleged that Nonini roughed up one of their journalists. Sometimes, one also finds their pictures strewn all over the newspaper, the picture having being taken during some private party.
