The four or five years that one spends at the University are make or break ones. There is no timetable and one is literally free to make his or her own rules. In fact, the only time that someone will know that rules exist is when they face the University senate for a disciplinary action. Other than that, one is free to come in and out of campus as they please. It is no wonder that one is considered sick if they dare sleep before midnight. The Friday parties at the student center and outside clubs makes one make a hard choice between being in the library and going to party. It is of course an open secret that the library is almost always open during Friday evenings. Even for those pursuing supposedly hard courses such engineering, Friday is a time to relax. If you are at the University of Nairobi, the options are many. If you have money, there is no limit to which parties you can attend.
This is why the moneyed guys in campus attract all the ladies. The broke guys are probably too busy in the library or doing side hustles to make ends meet. Since there are very few moneyed guys in campus, with most students barely surviving on the Helb loans, most campus ladies go out with working men. At UON, they drive past hostels such as Sella Awinja to pick up ladies. Unfortunately, some of the ladies are introduced to the underworld of illicit drugs, crime and alcohol.
Whereas some manage to come out of this, many don’t, they display calm emotions with very deep under currents. Of course, the male students engage in other pursuits to make money, as some are involved in crime. However, not all have gone through this. Some have used the four years to their advantage. For instance, in a recent interview with Kiss FM, the founder of Zetech College, narrated how he founded the college in his dorm room in hall 13, teaching students way past 3am in his hostel room in Hall 13 whilst still pursuing his engineering course.
